Prenatal, Postpartum, and Newborn Care
Prenatal Care
Routine prenatal visits are performed in our WBA office. We encourage you to bring spouses, significant others, family and/or friends as desired to be a part of this special time in your life. Prenatal visits will be scheduled every 4 weeks until the 28-32 weeks of pregnancy, every 2 weeks until the 36th week and every week thereafter until the baby is born. Initial Prenatal appointment 1 hour. Review complete history, complete intake documents, perform laboratory tests in addition to the items listed for routine prenatal care. Review new client folder. Optional gender test.
Routine Prenatal visits typically last 30 minutes. This allows for ample time to ask questions and discuss topics related to prenatal care and birth prep. Each visit is designed to address the physical, as well as emotional needs of both baby and mother. Questions are always encouraged.
What to expect for routine prenatal visit:
Ongoing education about procedure/testing options available: We believe informed consent and refusal is a vital component to midwifery care. Making informed decisions is important, emphasis is placed on providing options, education, and support as much as possible. We communicate educational components regularly through the HIPPA compliant app, Mobile Midwife. We review a checklist of reminders at every appointment. This helps you and us to stay on track with important information and discussions.
Laboratory testing: Standard pregnancy laboratory testing is available/offered in our office through LabCorp. Genetic Carrier and NIPT testing are also offered we use Unity. To learn more and watch a video click here.
Ultrasound: If an ultrasound is medically warranted or personally desired, it can be easily ordered.
Physician Consultation/Transfer of Care: We have built and continue to cultivate relationships with OB/GYN physicians, pediatricians, family physicians, laborists, and hospitals in our community. When referrals, consultation, or transfers are needed, warranted, or simply desired during the pregnancy, labor, delivery or postpartum/newborn period we are able to transfer the care to an appropriate provider.

Postpartum Care
Postpartum care and follow-up with mother and baby are important and a valuable part of the care with WBA midwives. Just like in pregnancy our midwives are available during the postpartum and newborn period for questions and urgent needs. During the Immediate postpartum period, the midwives respectfully and gently monitor mother and baby from birth through approximately 2-3 hours following delivery. Baby's time skin to skin with the mother is a high priority and interventions are kept to a minimum especially when all is within normal limits .
Postpartum visits are provided at 24-48 hours after birth which is usually in the home but sometimes in the office. We will also see mom and baby at one-two weeks and six weeks after the birth in the office. If more attention is needed, we are available to work with you or provide resources to other providers to best suite individual needs, ie lactation providers. Our goal for this time is to help support motherhood and breastfeeding. We observe breastfeeding make recommendations as needed, provide requested newborn testing, check baby’s weight, and make sure that complications have not arisen.
